Join artist Elyssa Wortzman for
her exhibition "eau de vie"
March 17th - 22nd, 2004
Opening Reception: Thursday, March 18th, 6 - 9 pm
DeLeon White Gallery, 1096 Queen Street West

Literally "water of life", eau de vie is the essence of alcohol that gives Cognac its unique flavour. French producers found the ideal means of shipping their liquid wares: distill the wine, transport it, then add water. Painted in and around the Cognac region of France, Elyssa Wortzman's vibrant works distill the essential elements of the landscape to create a concentrated vision of the internal and external natural world. Full of sweeping movements and powerful colours, the imagery transports the viewer to a personal, ideal realm where the essence of nature's beauty is revealed.

Casting an outward gaze at the landscape, Wortzman's dynamic paintings are born in direct communion with the forests, rivers, marinas and villagescapes that surround her. In contrast stands a series of intimate abstracts based on and inspired by the colours and forms in the landscape paintings. Here, Wortzman's inner vision further distills the ebb and flow of nature to reveal an intimate and spiritual reality. In dialogue with each other these two streams of work, representational and abstracted - create a natural balance reflecting the duality of the body and spirit that defines human nature.

The artist will be present throughout the exhibition. Join the artist Sunday, March 21st from 1:30 to 2:30 for a gallery talk for families with children of all ages.
